From Bruce Lee to Neo to Rocky and beyond, the best cinematic brawls. Ever!
By Jesse Schedeen
The fight scene. It's as American as apple pie and… lightsabers!
Uh, anyway. There's no denying that a key component of many great genre movies is an awesome fight scene. Be it a bare-fisted brawl, a duel with swords (laser or otherwise), or a more elaborate wuxia ballet, it's often the fight that can make the movie -- and the action hero.
So we figured it was time to put together a list of our picks for the best movie fight scenes of all time. Of course, no such list will ever make everyone happy. Some fans would say that most martial arts flicks would beat out a lot of the movies here that veer into sci-fi or other genres, but the goal of our picks was to maintain a taste of both Asian import classics while also staying true to the mainstream, Hollywood fare that we've all grown up on. Besides, you can check out IGN's Greatest Fight Scenes of Asian Cinema right here! (Also, a note: Gunfights are not included here; we figure that's a separate list all its own.)
So with that said, let's take a look at IGN's 25 Best Movie Fight Scenes of All Time… and when you're done here, be sure to comment with your favorite picks!
Bloodsport
Released 1988
Aside from the other obvious factors, one of the reasons movies based on fighting games so rarely succeed is because they're trying to tap into a formula Jean-Claude Van Damme already perfected in the '80s. Bloodsport was an early starring role for the “Muscles From Brussels” where he played an American fighter who entered the secret underground Kumite tournament. The final battle between Van Damme and Bolo Yeung allowed the former to unleash a full array of jump kicks and flips. Even when blinded by quick lime, Van Damme's character was able to tap into his ninjutsu training (mostly via slow-motion screaming) and handily (leg-ily?) defeat his treacherous opponent.
The Karate Kid
Released 1984
The Karate Kid was like Rocky for 1980s youth. It too chronicled the rise of an underdog fighter and his climactic showdown at the championship bout. In the final showdown with his Cobra Kai opponent Johnny, Daniel put on a good show until a nasty leg sweep and a few other illegal blows nearly took him out of the running. But he summoned all of Mr. Miyagi's quirky but effective training and unleashed the crane kick straight to Johnny's face. It was a blow felt around the world, and it sealed his well-deserved victory. Like Rocky, Daniel had respect and the championship -- but unlike Rocky it only took him one movie to win both.
The Princess Bride
Released 1987
The Princess Bride boasts one of the great sword fight scenes of modern cinema thanks to the first confrontation between Inigo Montoya and the Dread Pirate Roberts. These two weren't bitter rivals, but consummate gentlemen who found mutual respect for each other on the battlefield. This scene offers a fast-paced, well-plotted duel as both men trade sword thrusts, show off their gymnastic skills, and engage in a nonstop verbal sparring match to accompany the physical one. Viewers weren't sure whom to root for at this early stage of the movie, and that was half the fun.
Road House
Released 1989
Sometimes Patrick Swayze solves problems by dancing them away or making sexy pottery. In Road House, he simply beats the hell out of them. But even giving his nemesis Jimmy a savage lakeside beating wasn't enough. Broken and bloody, the cowardly Jimmy tried pulling a pistol on Swayze's Dalton. That was when he confirmed the legendary mystique that had surrounded him for the entire movie -- that he had once killed a man by ripping his throat out -- by repeating the move. The guy more than deserved it. Pain don't hurt, but losing your trachea sure does.
Ong Bak 2
Released 2008
If Batman had lived in 15th century Thailand, he would have turned out a lot like the hero of Ong Bak 2. Tony Jaa's Tien spends the first half of the movie training in just about every martial art known to man -- muay boran, silat, ninjutsu, drunken boxing -- plus various forms of weapons-based fighting. And Jaa is given the chance to put his varied skills to good use in the film's final fight scene. “Scene” only scratches the surface, however, as the battle rages on for a good half hour as Tien battles dozens and dozens of enemy troops using his limbs, blades, staves, and even a helpful elephant as tools of destruction. By the end, approximately seven people on the continent were still conscious.
